The weather watches alerts viewers that conditions are favorable for the development of severe weather. The issue time will be up to 24 hours before expected events.

Stage Two

   Weather Warning

A weather warning means that severe weather is occurring, imminent, or likely in the location indicated and is a threat to life and property. The issue time will be up to 6 hours before severe weather events.

Common Alerts Protocol Definitions

Urgency

The code denoting the urgency of the subject event of the alert message.

Immediate

Responsive action SHOULD be taken immediately.

Expected

Responsive action SHOULD be taken soon (within next hour).

Future

Responsive action SHOULD be taken in the near future.

Severity

The code denoting the severity of the subject event of the alert message.

Extreme

Extraordinary threat to life or property.

Severe

Significant threat to life or property.

Moderate

Possible threat to life or property.

Minor

Minimal to no known threat to life or property.

Certainty

The code denoting the certainty of the subject event of the alert message.

Observed

Determined to have occurred or to be ongoing.

Likely

Likely (probability greater than 50%).

Possible

Possible but not likely (probability less than/equal to 50%).

Unlikely

Not expected to occur (probability equals to 0%).
